Collection: Pilgrimage: making tracks, leaving traces, 3 - 24 February 2024

Artist talk - Tuesday 20 February 1pm-3pm

Alison Britton and Sandra Storey will be in the gallery from 1pm and will give a conducted discussion tour about their work at 2pm.

As artists and printmakers preoccupied with the impact of landscape, Alison Britton and Sandra Storey explore the significance of walks, walking and sense of place.

Alison Britton journeys through the landscape capturing elemental properties of the ground, and of the walks she has known now for over forty years. She drags prepared etching plates which take on the marks of visited and revisited places like Gormire Lake, Garbutt Wood and Sutton Bank. Places which have been key to her ideas and work.

Sandra Storey has recently walked the pilgrimage of St. Hilda, founding abbess of Whitby’s monastery. Through this she explores her continued attachment to the North York Moors landscape. Using natural objects found in remembered places Sandra creates printmaking plates and prints often developed further with additional media.
